This iSmart function helps you read and write text in multiple languages.
Talk to a student with a learning difficulty and they will tell you how challenging it is for them to read text. With various features users can personalise text, focus one line at a time and visualise what they are reading.
iSmart is also able to recognise different spoken languages and show the reader the written equivalent on the app. This is helpful when you need to spell a particularly difficult word or else as a different way of inputting text to be used for homework, notes or other documents.
This text-to-speech feature helps everyone to read those difficult words in multiple languages. Simply tap on the word, sentence or paragraph that you see on the screen and you will hear it read back to you.
You can also ask iSmart to read faster or slower according to what is easier for you to understand. Whilst listening to the text, it is also possible to drag down the reading ruler to help you focus on what you are hearing one line at a time.
Change text according to your needs ensuring that reading becomes easier
iSmart allows readers to open any eBook or educational resource and adapt the text according to one’s preferences.
Readers can change the font type (including also easy-to-read dyslexia fonts), font size, line height and column width. Having less words per line has been shown to make it less daunting for readers with learning difficulties to read text.
Apart from this, one can also change the colour of the text and the background since reading black on white is normally difficult and strains the eye. This feature is also ideal for people with visual impairments.
Easily confused characters in languages (like b and d in English) can be highlighted in a different colour. The same also applies to digits that can be confusing (like 2 and 5).
Similar letters and numbers can be a challenge whilst reading especially to those with learning difficulties. Seeing such difficult letters and numbers in a different colour allows the reader to be able to pay them particular attention whilst reading.
Build your mind map whilst reading your text. Research shows that the use of visual representations can help everyone.
What's a great reading tool without the ability to do mind mapping? Research shows that the use of mind mapping can help not only students with dyslexia but all those who have some form of learning difficulty. The benefit of using mind mapping in iSmart is that you can see the reading text at the same time while building your mind map. All mind maps can be saved with the educational material from which they were built and this is a help for revising before examinations.
Each node of the mindmap can be customised with different shapes and colours and then linked to other nodes to reinforce the most important concepts. Different mindmapping strategies can be adopted where a particular shape/colour combination would mean a particular type of concept, for example - green circles mean people, blue triangles are dates and purple squares are locations.
iSmart mimics a physical reading ruler which focuses the reader on one line at a time.
iSmart digitises the concept of a the physical reading ruler tool that allows the highlighting of a line at a time to facilitate reading by focusing on one line at a time. This can be applied to any document or eBook. Readers can also choose the colour of ruler they prefer and either drag it themselves with their finger or else make it automated.
